However, understanding often comes with a simple name change. This confusion stems from the coating industry's complex classification system, where numerous companies use inconsistent terminology. Water-in-sand and water-in-water coatings exemplify this issue. Both water-based sand and water-based water coatings fall under the umbrella term “multicolor coatings.” Within this category, the emulsions and additives are water-based materials. These transparent water-based coatings suspend multiple colored particles that, when sprayed onto walls, form stone-like patterns through the colored particles. They are currently the preferred choice for stone-effect coatings.

Water-in-water represents the first generation of multi-color coatings. Utilizing encapsulation and suspension technology, it blends various colored particles within a transparent emulsion to create a high-end stone-effect coating. Water-in-sand, on the other hand, resembles egg whites and yolks mixed with colored sand particles. It presents greater challenges than water-in-water due to the inclusion of sand, which differs significantly from water-based emulsions. Nevertheless, current water-in-sand technology is highly successful and widely applied.
