Precautions and Characteristics of Water-Based Rust Conversion Paint

I. Application
Water-based rust conversion paint is suitable for corrosion protection treatment of steel components exhibiting rust formation. It finds extensive application in the manufacture and maintenance of steel structures, tunnels, bridges, urban infrastructure, motorway facilities, railway installations, vessels, port machinery and terminal equipment, petroleum facilities, metallurgical and chemical processing equipment. It may serve as a rust-removing and rust-preventative primer prior to coating, or be employed independently as a rust-removing and rust-preventative paint.
II. Characteristics
Water-based rust conversion paint transforms iron oxides (rust) on steel surfaces into black organic iron compounds. This process generates a composite film on the steel surface, formed through both chemical bonding and physical adhesion. Consequently, the resulting coating is robust, dense, and exhibits exceptional adhesion, effectively isolating the steel substrate from corrosive media.
Application Method for Rust Conversion Anti-Rust Primer:
1. Substrate Preparation: Remove loose surface rust and contaminants from the metal surface using tools such as water jets, steel brushes, or power brushes. Degrease any oily areas. For firmly adhered old paint surfaces that are too smooth, roughen the surface before application.
2. Thoroughly stir prior to application. Adjust viscosity by adding deionised water (typically 10-20% by volume) if required. Apply by brush, roller, or spray. Apply multiple thin coats rather than one thick coat to prevent cracking. Where feasible, airless spraying or brush application yields superior rust conversion results.
3. Apply this product to rusted steel surfaces. A black compound will form within approximately one minute. Surface drying and protective film formation occur within 15–20 minutes. Subsequent coating processes may proceed after 3–5 hours.
4. Application conditions: Temperature above 10°C, humidity below 85%. Do not apply during rain or snow. Apply 2-3 coats depending on rust severity, with a minimum 30-minute interval between coats. Apply intermediate and top coats after 24 hours. When applying at low temperatures, add a suitable film-forming accelerator and use within 1-2 days.
5. For higher-standard applications requiring corrosion protection, apply a second coat 30-60 minutes after the first to achieve an even, dense, glossy film with enhanced anti-corrosion properties.
6. For surfaces with severe rusting and loose rust flakes, remove all loose rust before coating.
