Corrosion occurring during construction and drying processes is termed flash rust, with the three essential elements for its formation being substrate, water, and oxygen. Flash rust inhibitors can resolve the issues caused by flash rust, but how might one evaluate the efficacy of such agents?


Firstly, flash rust Inhibitors must be selected according to the specific substrate, as water-based acrylic anti-corrosion coatings are highly complex formulations where each component influences flash rusting behaviour. It is unscientific to discard a rust inhibitor after one or a few unsuccessful trials at the recommended dosage. During our experiments, we employed a straightforward method: adding the flash rust inhibitors at its recommended dosage to deionised water, then directly applying droplets onto the substrate requiring coating (previously treated according to standard substrate preparation methods). The droplets must remain undried for at least 24 hours. If no rusting occurs under these conditions, further testing may proceed. The advantage of this approach is that it eliminates interference from other components in the coating that might affect the assessment of the flash rust inhibitor's efficacy. It is also simple, rapid, and low-cost.


It is important to recognise that in actual construction processes, an inferior flash rust inhibitor can cause significant problems. Selecting a suitable flash rust inhibitors not only resolves flash rust issues but also enhances the long-term water resistance of the paint film, in-can stability, and other comprehensive benefits.
