Given that water-based acrylic anti-corrosion coatings are highly complex formulations, each component within the coating contributes to varying degrees to flash rust phenomena. The practice of testing a specific flash rust inhibitor at its recommended dosage once or a few times, then discarding it upon observing unsatisfactory results, is unscientific.
A straightforward method is introduced: Add flash rust inhibitors at its recommended dosage to deionized water, then directly apply droplets onto the substrate requiring coating (previously treated according to standard substrate preparation procedures). Ensure the droplets remain undried for at least 24 hours. Varieties that do not produce rust under these conditions may proceed to further testing. This approach eliminates interference from other paint components that could skew flash rust inhibition assessments, offering simplicity, speed, and low cost.
