Rust converters are chemical substances applied to metal surfaces that transform rusted areas into rust-inhibiting compounds, thereby achieving corrosion protection. Using rust converters is a simple and effective rust prevention method. Below is a guide on how to use them correctly.
1. Clean the Surface: Before applying the rust converter, thoroughly clean the steel surface to remove loose rust flakes, oil stains, dirt, and other unstable contaminants.
2. Brush or Spray: Apply the thoroughly mixed rust converter evenly onto the steel surface using a brush, sprayer, roller, or other tools. Follow the product instructions regarding application time or immersion duration.
3. Application Temperature: Optimal application occurs between 10°C (50°F) and 45°C (113°F), with humidity below 85%. Avoid outdoor application during rain, snow, or heavy fog.
4. Drying Time: Use a dryer or allow natural air-drying. Surface drying typically takes 30 minutes, with full cure within 6 hours.
5. Effect Verification: After surface drying, manually check if the surface has become smooth and rust-free. If the effect is unsatisfactory, repeat the above steps to apply the rust converter.
Additionally, personal protective measures should be taken during use to avoid direct contact with the rust converter and prevent excessive application, as this may produce counterproductive results. Avoid drips or missed areas during application. After use, store the product in a dry, shaded, and well-ventilated environment, shielding it from extreme conditions like high or low temperatures.
Finally, note that rust converter serves only as a rust-preventive primer. For optimal rust protection, it must be followed by a suitable topcoat. Regular maintenance and recoating are also required to sustain its rust-inhibiting effectiveness.
