The global push for energy efficiency demands better materials. Aerogel thermal insulation coatings are emerging as a leading solution across industries—from construction to energy—thanks to their extremely low thermal conductivity, minimal required thickness, and outstanding durability.
However, the impressive performance of this advanced material is fundamentally dependent on precise installation. A standardized, rigorous application process is the key to achieving the final, long-lasting insulation results.
1. Substrate Inspection and Preparation

The first critical step ensures the foundation is ready. The substrate surface must be firm, flat, and thoroughly clean. It is vital to eliminate all dust, grease, loose pieces, or peeling paint.
• Metal Surfaces: Any existing rust must be completely removed before proceeding.
• Concrete Surfaces: Inspect for and remove all voids, cracks, and oil contamination that could impede proper adhesion.
Crucial Application Note: Application should be strictly avoided when the substrate is excessively wet, when the air temperature drops below 5℃, or when the air humidity exceeds 85%. Ignoring these conditions risks poor film formation and reduced performance.
2. Primer Application
As aerogel coatings are typically water-based, applying a quality primer is essential to guarantee robust bonding. A penetrating primer must be applied first.
• Function: The primer acts as a sealing layer for the substrate, blocking contaminants and significantly enhancing adhesion. It also provides a smoother surface, facilitating the subsequent application of the topcoat.
• Method: Apply the primer evenly across the entire surface.
• Timing: Allow the primer to become surface-dry before advancing to the next stage.
Ensuring a perfectly prepared substrate and a solid prime coat lays the groundwork for the superior insulating power of the aerogel topcoat.
