In the previous article, we outlined several preparatory steps prior to applying aerogel coatings. This second instalment focuses on the core process: the application of aerogel coatings and subsequent curing procedures.

 

Application of the Aerogel Thermal Insulation Coating

 

This is the central step—the application method and film thickness directly dictate the coating's final thermal capabilities.

 

Preparation: Always ensure the coating is thoroughly mixed right before use to maintain uniformity.

 

Method Selection: Choose the best method based on viscosity and surface:

 

     • Troweling (Putty Knife): Recommended for coatings with high viscosity, or for complex surfaces like pipes and specialized equipment where spraying is not feasible.

     • Spraying: For medium viscosity, spraying  offers the most uniform finish and is generally preferred for large areas.

 

Aerogel coating perfectly adapts to irregularly shaped components of grain and oil processing equipment.

 

Multi-Coat Technique: To build the required thickness, aerogel coatings typically need multiple layers. Crucially, allow each coat to be completely surface-dry before applying the next one.

Curing, Finishing, and Protection

 

Once the desired thickness is applied, the coating must be properly cured.

 

• Protection: Shield the newly applied coat from external hazards like heavy rain, dust accumulation, and strong impacts during the curing period.

 

• Topcoat Application: After a minimum of 24 hours, a multi-functional, reflective, and wear-resistant topcoat should be applied. For exterior applications, popular aesthetic finishes (like textured or granite-effect paints) can be integrated.

 

• If required, a clear coat can be applied as needed to achieve a longer lifespan.
