The Structure of Water-Based Coatings

To understand water-based coatings, we must first look at their internal structure. Typically, a formula is made of four main parts: Water (Solvent), Polymer Emulsion (Resin), Pigments/Fillers, and Coatings Additives. If we compare a bucket of paint to a team, the emulsion is the backbone, the pigments are the clothes, water is the carrier, and additives are the essential "commanders."

Water and Emulsion: The Carrier and the Skeleton

Water is the core of eco-friendly paint. It carries all ingredients to the surface and then evaporates. The polymer emulsion is the film-forming substance, which determines adhesion, hardness, and weather resistance. Without a high-quality emulsion, the paint would be like a building without a skeleton, unable to stand the test of time.

Pigments and Fillers: The Source of Color and Body

Pigments provide the vibrant colors and hiding power, while fillers add thickness and solidity to the paint film. They give the coating a "full" look and provide essential physical protection for the surface.

Coatings Additives: The Key to Excellence

Although the first three parts make up over 95% of the weight, it is the tiny amount of coatings additives that makes these raw materials work together. The purpose of additives is to overcome the natural weaknesses of water-based systems and unlock the full potential of the emulsion.

Defoamers: Mixing and application inevitably create air bubbles. Defoamers are responsible for breaking these bubbles to prevent "pinhole" defects in the paint film.

During the production process, without the addition of Enze Chemical’s defoamer, a large amount of mechanical foam is generated; furthermore, foaming occurs during transport due to shaking.

Wetting & Dispersing Agents: They ensure pigment particles don't clump or settle, keeping colors even and helping the paint spread smoothly on the substrate.

Enze Chemical’s wetting agents and dispersants can rapidly wet powdered materials and disperse them in water

Thickeners (Rheology Modifiers): They control the "temperament" of the paint, ensuring it stays smooth during brushing while preventing sagging on vertical surfaces.

Water-based paint thickeners help to keep the powder in the paint evenly suspended in water, preventing it from settling.

Enze Chemical: Providing Total Raw Material Solutions

In a complex formula, the stability of every component is vital. Enze Chemical is not only dedicated to producing high-quality polymer emulsions but has also spent years researching coatings additives. We know that only when additives and emulsions work in perfect synergy can water-based paint achieve the texture and lifespan of traditional oil-based coatings. Choosing Enze means choosing a more mature and stable solution for your water-based coating raw materials.
