In the process of paint manufacturing, the first step is to select the appropriate components to ensure that the performance of each component meets the requirements for paint use. When initiating formulation design, three general steps are typically followed:

 

① First, select the base resin and pigments based on the coating's application requirements;

② Determine the solvents and diluents based on the application requirements and the selected base resin;

③ Decide whether additional additives are needed and what type of additives are required.

For coloured coatings, after selecting the appropriate components, the most critical factor determining the coating's properties is the pigment volume concentration. Pigment volume concentration is the ratio of the volume of pigments and fillers in the coating to the total volume of all non-volatile components (including base resin, pigments, and fillers) in the formulation. The composition of the solution affects the drying time, film-forming properties, and application characteristics of the coating. Additionally, it plays a significant role in controlling and improving the viscosity and flow properties of the coating.

Currently, the coatings industry has developed significantly. According to incomplete statistics, there are over ten thousand types of coatings available, with new types continuously emerging and being developed. It is impossible to discuss all coatings formulations individually; the key is to understand the basic principles of formulation design.

 

Due to the varying environmental conditions of the substrate, different performance requirements are placed on the coating film (e.g., anti-corrosion requirements, acid and alkali resistance requirements, decorative requirements, etc.). The quantities and relative proportions of each component in the coating formulation also have a significant impact on the coating's performance (such as flowability and drying properties) and the coating film's

 

performance (such as gloss and hardness). Therefore, developing a new coating formulation that meets usage requirements is a complex task. Formulations designed based on fundamental knowledge and principles must undergo necessary testing to identify those that truly meet usage requirements.
