Formulating waterborne industrial coatings is far more complex than simply substituting organic solvents with water. While water serves as an eco-friendly carrier, its physical properties—high surface tension, slow evaporation rates, and inherent corrosiveness—introduce major manufacturing hurdles. In heavy-duty industrial applications, resin emulsions provide the fundamental binder film, but the functional additive package dictates whether that paint can actually be produced, stored, applied, and cured without catastrophic defects.
During the initial wet-to-dry transition on bare steel substrates, water aggressively attacks the metal surface. Without chemical intervention, dissolved iron ions bleed into the wet film, causing instantaneous micro-corrosion. Incorporating a compatible polyurethane thickener ensures the formulation achieves the exact pseudoplastic profile required for effortless sprayability, smooth leveling, and heavy-build sag resistance.
