Dispersants are a crucial class of additives in coatings, playing an indispensable role in water-based industrial paints. Unlike film-forming aids or pH adjusters that volatilize during drying, and unlike wetting agents, defoamers, or thickeners that are added in lower quantities, dispersants remain present throughout the paint film at relatively high concentrations. This persistent presence significantly influences the film's performance. Therefore, selecting and using the right dispersant greatly enhances coating performance.
Characteristics of Dispersants:
1. Reduce Dispersion Time and Energy
Through affinity interactions, they rapidly transform the surface of pigment particles from a “gas-solid interface” to a “liquid-solid interface.” This shortens the time and energy required for grinding.
2. Prevent Flocculation and Coarsening
Dispersants act on pigment surfaces, preventing mutual attraction and proximity through electrostatic repulsion or steric hindrance, thereby enhancing system stability.
Notably, finer pigment particles possess larger specific surface areas and higher surface energies, requiring dispersants with greater adsorption strength. Thus, dispersant dosage directly impacts pigment paste quality.
3. Prevents Floating Pigments and Blooming
Similar to the above principle, this reflects the fundamental stabilizing capability of dispersants.
4. Enhancing Color Performance
Improving tinting strength and color development. It boosts the saturation and transparency of organic pigments while increasing the hiding power of inorganic pigments.
5. Impact on Paint Film Properties
After the paint film forms, the dispersant does not leave the film but remains permanently embedded within it as an integral part. Its influence on the paint film's properties is undeniably significant.
