Water-based coatings use water as their primary solvent, posing minimal harm to humans and the environment. They offer convenient application, excellent safety, and ease of storage and transportation, making them a key development direction in modern coatings. While water-based coatings are widely adopted in architectural and electrophoretic applications, their use in metal anti-corrosion coatings remains limited. When applied to steel surfaces, the presence of water and oxygen during drying can easily trigger corrosion—known as flash rust. This issue is particularly challenging on high-carbon steel or cast iron components.

 

To address this phenomenon, we have developed a flash rust inhibitor. Requiring only minimal addition, it offers outstanding flash rust prevention without affecting the coating's drying speed or other properties. It also enhances the coating's salt spray and water resistance, demonstrates excellent compatibility with coating systems, and is free of nitrites. This aligns with national policies promoting green development through the “oil-to-water” transition, upholding the principle that “lucid waters and lush mountains are invaluable assets,” and advancing the development of environmentally friendly products.

 

Mechanism of Action for Flash Rust Inhibitors

 

Generally, the mechanism of action for flash rust inhibitors aligns with that of long-term corrosion protection in coatings, categorized into three types: corrosion-retarding, passivating, and shielding. Since flash rust arises from electrochemical reactions, employing reducing agents to release negative charges for corrosion inhibition represents the simplest and most effective approach. However, such reducing agents often exhibit excessive ionic properties, compromising the long-term water resistance of paint films. Consequently, technological advancements have led to the development of passivating and shielding flash rust inhibitors. Since the fundamental principles of corrosion inhibition remain consistent, these products also deliver sustained anti-corrosion performance.
