Currently, water-based coatings are widely used in the coatings industry. In China's industrial coatings sector, emphasis is placed on the appearance, performance, and durability of the coating film, with requirements significantly higher than those for architectural coatings. So why does flash rust occur?
Flash rust is an electrochemical phenomenon. Areas with potential differences form charge migration pathways, leading to corrosion under the combined action of water and oxygen. When water-based paint contacts metal surfaces, the high latent heat of water evaporation causes water to linger longer on the metal surface, thereby inducing corrosion of the metal substrate.
A common method to reduce flash rusting is incorporating flash rust Inhibitors during the preparation of water-based rust-proof paint. These agents are chemical compounds that effectively prevent flash rusting on steel. They inhibit cathodic potential difference reactions within the substrate, preventing iron ionization. When applied to steel surfaces, they form a sealed protective film that isolates the steel from the external environment. This barrier prevents oxidation reactions and moisture intrusion, thereby avoiding surface rust spots on the steel. It can achieve rust prevention without compromising the substrate's surface appearance. Under specific conditions, it may even enhance the substrate's surface brightness.
Flash rust Inhibitors do not reduce coating viscosity and offer excellent corrosion inhibition and salt spray resistance. They have a broad application range, providing flash rust suppression for various substrates including iron, cast iron, carbon steel, alloy steel, and welded joints. They exhibit good compatibility with coating systems, do not affect drying speed or substrate adhesion, and enhance the rust-preventive properties of coatings.
