Product features:
Ethylene glycol, also known as ‘glycol’ or ‘1,2-ethylene glycol’, abbreviated as EG, is the simplest diol. Ethylene glycol is a colourless, odourless liquid with a sweet taste. Ethylene glycol is miscible with water and acetone, but exhibits limited solubility in ethers. It serves as a solvent, antifreeze agent, and raw material for synthesising polyester. Its polymer, polyethylene glycol, functions as a phase transfer catalyst and is also employed in cell fusion.
Typical performance:
Boiling point: 197.3℃
Density/20℃: Relative density (water=1) 1.1155
Relative density (air=1) 2.14
Appearance and properties: Colourless, sweet-tasting, viscous liquid
Vapour pressure/20℃: 0.06 mmHg
Flash point: 111.1°C
Viscosity/16°C: 25.66 mPa·s
Surface tension/20°C: 46.49 mN/m
Chemical properties:
Ethylene glycol, owing to its low molecular weight and reactive nature, can undergo esterification, etherification, alcoholysis, oxidation, aldol condensation, and dehydration reactions. In the leather and pharmaceutical industries, it serves as a hydrating agent and solvent respectively. Monoethyl ether and monomethyl ether of ethylene glycol are excellent solvents; methyl ethyl ketone, for instance, dissolves fibres, resins, paints, and numerous other organic compounds. Whilst possessing formidable solvency, ethylene glycol readily undergoes metabolic oxidation to form toxic oxalic acid, thus limiting its widespread use as a solvent. As an antifreeze agent, a 60% aqueous solution of ethylene glycol freezes at −40°C.
Purpose:
Primarily used in the production of polyester fibres, polyester resins, moisture absorbers, plasticisers, surfactants, synthetic fibres, cosmetics and explosives. Also employed as a solvent for dyes/inks, in formulating engine antifreeze, as a gas dehydrating agent, in resin manufacturing, and as a wetting agent for cellophane, fibres, leather and adhesives. It can be used to produce synthetic PET resin, with fibre-grade PET yielding polyester fibres and bottle-grade PET used for manufacturing mineral water bottles. It also serves in the production of alkyd resins and ethylene glycol, whilst functioning as an antifreeze agent. Beyond automotive antifreeze applications, it is employed in industrial refrigeration systems, commonly referred to as a secondary coolant.
