Bentonite is a claystone, also known as montmorillonite claystone, often containing minor amounts of illite, kaolinite, calcite, and other minerals. Typically white or pale yellow in colour, it may exhibit shades of light grey due to varying iron content. Its primary chemical constituents are silica, alumina, and water, alongside elements such as iron, magnesium, and calcium.
